P5 investigate measure........tractor style!

16th Nov 2017

In P5 we are learning about farming during WAU.  We linked our learning across the curriculum and investigated measure.

Our 1st challenge:

How many Blue Power New Hollands will fit one behind the other in the carpark from the playgroup to the gate?

We had to work together and decide what we needed to do.  We decided to use metre sticks to measure the length of the tractor and trundle wheels to measure the length of the carpark.  We then divided the length of the carpark, 48m by the length of the tractor, 5m.  We could then conclude that 9 tractors could fit one behind the other in the length of the carpark.

Our 2nd challenge:

What is the difference between the circumference of the large tyre and the small tyre.

This was a tricky challenge and we had a lot of thinking to do.  We couldn't use the measuring equipment to measure circumference so we had to think about an alternative way to measure.  After a lot of discussion we had a Eureka moment and we decided we could use string to find out the length of the circumference and then measure the length of the string.  We then applied our knowledge of m and cm and changed the measures to cm to make it easier to subtract and calculate an answer.  From our investigation we discovered that the circumference of the large wheel was 75cm longer than the length of the tractor.

Massive thanks to Darragh and his Daddy........that sure is a fine tractor Darragh!
